Wedding venues east London, and what a room costs outside the middle of the city

Almost everything written about hiring a room in London is written about the middle of it. Most of London is not the middle, most of its rooms are not there, and the difference in price between a building inside the Circle line and an equivalent one four miles out is larger than any other lever available to somebody hiring in this city. What changes as you go out is not only the figure. It is the kind of building, the way it is found, and which direction your guests are travelling.

The gradient out of the centre, and where it actually falls

The drop is not smooth and it is not about distance. It falls at the edge of the central business districts, because that is where the corporate weekday trade that sets central prices stops. One stop beyond it the same size of room, in a similar building, is let for a fraction, and two miles beyond that the figure barely moves again. So the useful move is not to go as far out as possible; it is to go just past the boundary of the market you cannot afford and then stop, because the second half of the journey costs your guests more than it saves you.

East london event space: the industrial stock and what has happened to it

East London's rooms are converted industrial buildings, working breweries, railway arches, studios and warehouse floors, and the market has split in two. The buildings that were discovered are now priced like central ones and market themselves heavily. The ones that have not been are still let by the hour by businesses whose main trade is something else, and they are reached by naming the industrial estate, the arch or the brewery rather than by searching for a venue. Ask a brewery directly: many have a taproom and a floor above it and almost none advertises either.

South london venue hire: Victorian pubs, civic halls and a thinner middle

South of the river the stock is older and more municipal: large Victorian pubs with function rooms, town halls and civic buildings from the borough era, church halls in quantity, and a small number of converted industrial spaces. What it lacks is the mid-sized dedicated event floor that east London has plenty of, so a booking for a hundred and fifty people either takes a town hall or splits between two rooms. The compensation is price, which is the lowest of any direction out of the centre.

Venue hire south london and venue hire south east london: the cheapest direction

The south-east is the least expensive part of the city to hire a room in, for the unglamorous reason that it has the least competition for its buildings from anybody paying corporate rates. Expect civic halls, community centres, sports and social clubs, and pub rooms, let by the hour with a caretaker and a deposit rather than on a minimum spend. Expect also that the buildings are further apart and the transport between them is worse, so the borough and the nearest station matter more here than anywhere else in London.

Venue hire richmond and the outer west, where outer does not mean cheaper

The gradient has exceptions and the river is the main one. Richmond, Twickenham, Kingston and the reaches upstream are outer London by geography and central London by price, because a riverside room with a garden is scarce everywhere and these boroughs have most of the ones inside the city. If the water is the point, the honest comparison is against Henley or Marlow rather than against Hackney. If it is not the point, the same money three miles inland buys twice the room.

Halls for hire london: the borough's own stock is the cheapest of all

Every London borough lets rooms: town halls, libraries, leisure centres, community centres, adult education buildings and old vestry halls, at published hourly rates with a residents' or a community rate that is materially lower than the commercial one. The council's own hall lettings pages are where this is listed and it is not in any directory. It is the cheapest large room in the city, it comes with a caretaker and a deposit and the hall rules, and it is let by a clerk in office hours rather than by a sales team.

Wedding halls in london and the family-scale rooms

The rooms that take three and four hundred people for a family wedding are almost all outside the centre, and most of them are community, religious or civic buildings rather than venues: banqueting halls attached to community associations, temple and mosque halls, Irish and Caribbean community centres, and the larger civic rooms. They are used to numbers a hotel would refuse, they are used to outside caterers, and several will let you bring your own everything. They are found through the community that runs them rather than through a search.

London party venues: which direction suits which night

If the evening ends late and guests are going home across the city, the centre earns its premium because everybody can get out of it. If the guests are local to one side of London, hiring on that side removes the journey entirely and halves the cost. And if the booking is a daytime event, direction barely matters and price is all that is left, which argues for the cheapest borough with a station. Decide which of the three the evening is before choosing where to look.

The transport question inverts once you leave the centre

In the middle of London everybody is travelling in and the last train is the constraint. Outside it, guests are travelling across, which is slower, worse served late and frequently needs two changes. That matters more than the finish time on the licence: a room that may serve until one in the morning in a borough with no night service is a room your guests leave at eleven. Check the actual late-night service from the venue's nearest station towards where the guests live, not into the centre.

Questions people ask about wedding venues east London

How much cheaper is outer London?

Materially, and the saving falls in one step at the edge of the central business districts rather than gradually with distance. Going just past that boundary captures most of it; going much further mainly adds travel for your guests without reducing the figure much more.

Which direction out of London is cheapest?

The south and south-east, because they have the least competition from anybody paying corporate rates. The trade-off is that buildings are further apart and cross-city transport is worse, so the nearest station matters more than the postcode.

How do I find a borough's own halls?

Through the council's hall lettings pages rather than any directory. Every London borough lets town halls, libraries, leisure and community centres at published hourly rates, usually with a lower community or residents' rate, and none of it is advertised where people search.

Is a riverside venue in Richmond outer London prices?

No. The river is the exception to the gradient: Richmond, Twickenham and Kingston are outer by geography and central by price, because a riverside room with a garden is scarce everywhere. Compare them against Henley rather than against Hackney.
