What a celebrant fee buys
A celebrant fee is almost entirely somebody's hours: meeting you, writing a ceremony that sounds like the two of you, rehearsing it and delivering it on the day. That is why it does not scale with your guest count and why it sits in the fixed half of a wedding budget rather than the per-head half.
The Saturday premium exists because a Saturday is the scarce commodity in this trade. A celebrant can only do one wedding a day, and Saturdays in season are the days everybody wants, so the price rations them. The same logic runs through photography, bands and venues, which is why moving a date midweek moves several lines at once.
Questions organisers ask before they book
- Does a celebrant replace the registrar?
- In England and Wales, no. A celebrant ceremony is not a legal marriage there, so couples hold a short statutory ceremony as well. Scotland is different and a registered celebrant can marry you legally.
- Why is Saturday more expensive?
- Because a celebrant can only work one wedding a day and Saturdays in season are the scarce days. The published figures here show the gap explicitly rather than leaving you to discover it in a quote.
- What is included in the fee?
- Typically the meetings, the writing, the rehearsal and the ceremony itself, with travel sometimes separate. Ask specifically about travel and overnight stays if your venue is a long way from where the celebrant is based.
