Wedding costs, line by line, from the venue and the photographer to the ceremony fee, read off what each supplier publishes

A wedding budget fails in the lines nobody priced. The venue and the photographer are the two largest, and both publish prices in shapes that are hard to compare: a venue hire fee with or without catering, a photographer's package with or without the second shooter. This section reads the published prices of each supplier type into one unit, beside the statutory ceremony fees, so a budget can be built from real figures.

How to build a wedding budget from published prices

  1. Price the venue as a total, not a hire fee. A hire fee, a minimum spend and a per-head package are three different prices for the same room. Ask each venue for the total for your guest count on your date, including the corkage and the service charge, before comparing any two.
  2. Read the photographer's package in hours and deliverables. Published packages differ in coverage hours, whether a second photographer is included, and how many edited images are delivered. Price per hour of coverage is the number that makes two packages comparable.
  3. Add the ceremony fee and the notice fee. A civil ceremony carries a registrar fee set by the local authority and a notice fee set nationally, and both sit outside every supplier's quote. They are small, fixed and easy to leave out of a budget.
  4. Benchmark the total before you commit. The Wedding Cost Checker Wedding Cost Benchmark at the top of this page is the whole-wedding figure: the median of the averages 3 publishers print, each dated on its own page. Add the lines above together and set the total against it before a deposit goes down.

Questions organisers ask before they book

How much does a wedding cost?
The Wedding Cost Checker Wedding Cost Benchmark at the top of this page gives the median of the whole-wedding averages 3 publishers print, with the range beside it. Published supplier prices put the venue and catering at the largest share, then photography, then the rest.
What does a registrar cost for a wedding?
Local authorities publish their own ceremony fees, which vary by day of the week and by room, plus the fixed fee for giving notice. The register of licensed venues in this section links each authority's published fee page.
How much do wedding photographers charge?
Photographers publish packages by coverage hours, and the price index here converts each to a price per hour of coverage so a full-day package and a half-day package can be compared.
